Turning Competitors into Teammates
Just a few days ago I spent an evening visiting with a friend of mine, Sean Richardson, who I hadn’t seen in months. In the last month, we had each launched a podcast unbeknownst to the other.
While some would view the situation as less than desirable, spouting off something about stealing listeners, we both viewed it in the opposite light. There’s no better time! A rising tide lifts all boats so if we can get the population of Baton Rouge listening to podcasts, they’re likely to listen to both shows. Our target audience partially overlaps but our shows are unique enough to hold their own viewership.
What we’re able to do, then, is to share what we have — ideas, tips, gear, guests, promotion — thus up-ing each other’s game by being a resource for each other. When it comes to creativity, there’s room for everyone to make something and to express themselves in their unique way. So don’t be afraid of the competition. Get to know them. Swap stories with them. Serve them. We’re a community, not a war zone.
