A Few Thoughts on Putting Down Roots

I was recently talking with one of my friends about the concept of putting down roots. Calling a place home and settling in. For a long time, I thought that idea was boring, un-adventurous and a bit too traditional for me. I had plans to see the world, move often and maybe live overseas for a year. To me, anything other than that life was giving up on the lifestyle of adventure and non-conformity that I wanted for myself.

The Foundation of Creating Something Iconic

This past week I attended the CROP design conference in Baton Rouge where I was privileged to listen to and meet some of my design heroes. One such designer — the king of thick lines himself — was Aaron Draplin of Draplin Design Company. He's known all over the world for his obsession with classic design — designs that worked 50 years ago and continue to work today. Their secret, he says, lies in their sense of clarity and utility. A state of being almost "undesigned".
